For some, 2017 may have started out with a bang. But for J.I.D., it started out with nothing but bangers. The recent Dreamville signee and Spillage Village member has finally let off his debut album, The Never Story. Packed full of both lyrical and production features from the likes of EarthGang, Childish Major, 6LACK, and the man behind Dreamville himself, J. Cole, this album is the nail in the coffin for J.I.D.’s staying power. Long story short, he isn’t going anywhere.
The 12 song album takes us on a musical journey that is, quite frankly, a southern groove straight from Atlanta. To kick it off, we’re graced with a beautiful intro titled, “Doo Wop,” that leads us into the authoritative, “General.” It is here where J.I.D. not only formally introduces us to his skills as an MC, but he proves that the flows we’ve heard before on his freestyles and previously released tracks are indeed the real deal. Then there’s the track “Never,” where the album suddenly takes off. Throughout the remainder of the project, J.I.D. puts on a showcase of artistry, with songs covering everything from his best friends to romance to the general hustle of just trying to make it. Notable tracks like “Underwear” and “8701” (feat. 6LACK) serve almost as a guide to J.I.D. himself as a rapper, weaving intricate rhymes with some truly unique metaphors to create some rather original tunes, to say the least.
The Never Story may be the perfect introduction to an artist on the rise, especially one that provides a litany of sounds, vibes, and inspirations. Give J.I.D.’s The Never Story a listen below, and be sure to grab it from iTunes.
